Musa aeae (correctly known as Musa ‘Ae Ae’ or the Koae Banana) is an ultra-rare, highly coveted Hawaiian heirloom banana plant known for its spectacular variegated foliage. It is often considered the “Holy Grail” for rare plant collectors due to its difficulty to propagate and its striking aesthetic.
The massive leaves are splashed with a mosaic of white, cream, and multiple shades of green. Unlike many variegated plants, the variegation is highly unstable and unique to every leaf. When ripe, the bananas turn yellow with white stripes. The flesh is white, creamy, and can be eaten fresh or cooked (tasting similar to a Maoli-style cooking banana).
